Encountered in grassy and weedy fields, brushy woodland edge, and hedgerows. 

Combination of grayish underparts, pink bill, and striped crown identify this sparrow in all plumages. Immatures have reddish-brown and pale buff head stripes; adults have black and white head stripes. 

Feeds on seeds, grass, fruits, and insects.
