A bird of woodland edge, open areas, and second-growth habitats.

Adult males have a black, greenish back. Females are duller, and lack the black cap. Separated from American Goldfinch by the yellow undertail coverts and white wing patch at the base of the primary feathers.

Cup-shaped nest built from plant fibers is placed in shrubs or trees. Feeds mostly on seeds, flowers, buds, and fruits.
