Calliope Hummingbird

An uncommon visitor to the park in the spring, this is the smallest hummingbird found in the U.S.  The male has purplish rays on a white throat and both sexes have a relatively short bill.  The female has a pale line above the bill and is very similar to our other female hummers but having a shorter tail, its wing will extend beyond it at rest.
