THE MOUNT DIABLO SIGNAGE PROJECT
By Harvey S. Brosler, Project Chair

Prior to 1993, trail signs on Mount Diablo were almost nonexistent. Even with a copy of the Mount Diablo Interpretative Association (MDIA) map, trail locations were confusing.

Diablo State Park, comprising more than 20,000 acres and over 225 miles of roads or trails at that time or as itmay be enlarged taking into consideration future acquisitions.

The Project is a joint collaboration between MDIA, its volunteers, and the State Department of Parks. MDIA reimburses the Parks Department for the cost of the six foot recycled plastic posts, estimated to last fifty years. Each post cost $25 to $30 based upon the procurement cost of at the time. The Parks Department provides the metal signs that are made at Folsom Prison, along with furnishing the “arrows” and generic trail signs. The State also supplies equipment such as digging bars, posthole diggers, shovels, and incidental supplies, and allows for the use of a State-owned vehicle to carry the equipment and supplies. Installation is done entirely by volunteers. To date, approximately 225 posts and 450 signs have been installed.

If you are interested in volunteering for future work parties, contact MDIA.
