"MOUNT DIABLO MINES"

Mr. J. M. Casserly, Superintendent of the Keokuk copper mine, at Mount Diablo, has placed upon our table several very fine specimens of copper ore taken from the Elmira, a newly discovered lode, which has been opened only thirty days. The ore is a very good quality of sulphurets, intermixed with black oxide of copper. It is the best ore we have ever seen from Mount Diablo. The Elmira is about three hundred feet below the Superior mine, in Clayton District. Both mines are located within seven miles of a good coal mine, with a near and convenient intermediate point, to which a good down grade may be obtained for both the coal and copper--a good locality for furnaces. Mr. C. speaks very encouragingly of the copper mining interests generally of Mount Diablo. The Keokuk is now working eight men, has a tunnel in 50 feet to the vein, from which an incline has been run on the vein upwards of 100 feet. Their first shipment of ore is now on the way to this city. The Open Sesame has issued proposals for putting up machinery at the mine, and are now making preparations for receiving the same, by clearing up the ground, making roads, etc.
