Excerpt from "SUMMARY OF MINING NEWS. GLEANED FROM VARIOUS SOURCES." THE MONTE DIABLO MINES

The Contra Costa Gazette of 2nd January says: Our miners are still industriously at work around Diablo. The Mount Zion tunnel is now about 1,100 feet in length, and it is estimated that 75 feet more will reach the ledge. The road to the Keokuk is not quite completed, but the miners have resumed work on the tunnel. The Great Republic is very promising, and improves rapidly. The Superior bids fair to realize the most sanguine expectations of its holders; the ore now being taken out is very good. The Pioneer is also very promising, but for some cause or other, work is suspended for the present. The Summit of Zion company are running a tunnel to strike their ledge at a considerable depth. The above are but a small part of the claims in the Clayton District upon which labor is being expended with encouraging results. In Diablo District, the Unexpected, Horse Shoe, Alpine and others, are vigorously worked, and held in high estimation by their owners. The scarcity of powder is a source of no little embarassment in conducting mining operations.
