Formation of the Art Committee for Mt Diablo Summit Gallery
by Peg Steunenberg, MDIA Board and Art Committee member
(Mt. Diablo Review - Fall 1997)

MDIA’s Art Committee was formed several months prior to the October 1993 Dedication of the Summit Museum. The idea of a gallery of art exhibits and displays relating to the social and natural history of Mt Diablo was presented by MDIA to Mt Diablo State Park management early in 1993 and, through working together, it was decided to incorporate the large wall areas of the staircase between the upper and lower levels as a display site.

Original members of the Committee included Shirley Nootbaar, Greg Piatt, Chappell Holt, Margory Lee, Ardyce Felix and Peg Steunenberg. Guidelines for exhibits were established by the committee and Warren Dreher, the-then Curator of the Bedford Gallery (established in the Dean Lesher Regional Center for the Arts in Walnut Creek)assisted in establishing criteria for installing exhibits.

The first exhibit consisted of 35 pieces and was displayed during the Gala Evening prior to the Summit Museum Dedication on October 16, 1993 at Diablo Country Club. The show was dismantled immediately following the Gala and twelve, previously-selected artworks were transported early on the morning of the Dedication to the summit for display in the allocated gallery space in the museum.

This exhibit was entitled "Art and Advocacy in High Places". Based on Wallace Stegner’s philosophy of using art for promoting responsibility to our public lands, the show was diverse in content ranging from oils, watercolors, photography and acrylics to computer-generated and textile art. Diversity in styles and subject matter was demonstrated by broad-stroke landscapes, crisp images and illustrative technique. The exhibit was in place until Spring 1994. Original exhibitors included Jim Belhke, Peter Brown, Warren Dreher, Pam Glover, Peg Humphreys, Stephen Joseph, Marjory Lee, Liz Piatt, Greg Piatt, Shirley Nootbaar, Michael Sewell and Peg Steunenberg.
