The proposed...DIABLO TRAIL

The Diablo Trail has been proposed by Save Mount Diablo as a trail link joining Walnut Creek to Los Vaqueros Reservoir (under construction) in eastern Contra Costa County. Its route will cross over lands of several different parks or open space areas (see map and profile below). These include Shell Ridge Recreation Area, Diablo Foothills Regional Park, Mount Diablo State Park, Morgan Territory Regional Preserve, lands of the Contra Costa Water District, and Round Valley Regional Park. The trail will overlay more than twenty individual roads and/or trails that are already in existence, so no new trail construction will be required.

Currently the proposal for this trail has been approved in concept by Mount Diablo State Park and the East Bay Regional Park District. Before the entire trail can become a reality, approval must be obtained from the City of Walnut Creek and the Contra Costa Water District. Depending on its final alignment in eastern Contra Costa County.

The trail will be 30 to 35 miles long. Because of the length of the trail, several backpack camps have been proposed for use by long-distance trail-users. One has been approved and is currently under construction in Morgan Territory Regional Preserve on the Highland Ridge Trail just southwest of the paved Morgan Territory Road.

Note: A trail profile will be added to this page at a later date.
