Mount Diablo Review - Spring 2001
The year
2001 is a very important one for Mt Diablo with many
anniversaries and reasons to celebrate the mountain.
Perhaps historically the most important is that it is 150
years since Col. Leander Ransom, General Land Office
Deputy Surveyor for California established the Initial
Point at the top of the mountain to start the formal
mapping of land within the State and Nevada Celebrate
this with the Mount Diablo Surveyors Historical Society
(MDSHS) on Saturday, July 21st, 2001.Its eighty years since the park was founded in April 1921 and seventy years since the public was allowed access in April 1931. Celebrate this with birthday cake with the Mt Diablo State Park (MDSP) staff and the other Mt Diablo 2001 sponsoring organizations at the Summit on Saturday, May 5th, 2001. It is thirty years since Save Mount Diablo (SMD) was formed by Mary Bowerman and Art Bonwell to become formidable and effective fighters for, and supporters of, preservation and growth of our open spaces. Celebrate this with Save Mount Diablo at a whole host of special 30th Anniversary walks, hikes and other events spread throughout the year (see the April-on-the-Mountain schedule for more details. It is nine years since Mt Diablo Interpretive Association (MDIA), in cooperation with Mt Diablo State Park, raised the money to pay for major renovation and creation of the exhibits for the Summit Museum and Visitor Center and it is two years since Mt Diablo Interpretive Association opened the Mitchell Canyon Interpretive Center as the second interpretive and visitor center on the mountain. Celebrate this with a day of walks, talks and hikes led by MDIA experts in September at the MDIA Annual Meeting and Mitchell Canyon Anniversary. The groups mentioned above Mt Diablo State Park, Mt Diablo Interpretive Association, Mt Diablo Surveyors Historical Society, Save Mount Diablo have joined together along with the Museum of San Ramon Valley (which will be hosting a two-month long exhibit on Mt Diablo during June and July) to "Celebrate Mt Diablo 2001 ". Whilst each group will organize and run their own events, they will all be working together to put on such events as the cake cutting and birthday party on May 5 and to show the community that, while many different groups work on the mountain, they can all work together to improve and expand the visitors experience. For details of "Celebrate Mt Diablo 2001 " events go to (address to be added) or call MDIA at the number at the bottom of this page. |
